A 1981 newspaper ad encourages shoppers to come to Uptown Minneapolis.

As many people head to the malls and online retailers this holiday season, Uptown retailers and restaurants are hoping that consumers include Uptown in their shopping plans. OurUptown.com will take you through just some of the options awaiting those who come.

Books, books, and more books
The Twin Cities largest independent bookstore, Magers & Quinn Booksellers, has a huge selection of new and used books from hard-to-find collectables, top sellers, to cookbooks, social sciences, sci-fi and more. Located at 3038 Hennepin Avenue.

Booksmart carries a wide selection of books in its new location in the lower level of 1300 West Lake Street, which is below Cheapo.

A highly-respected, well stocked thriller of a bookstore, Once Upon a Crime, is a must visit for finding the perfect book for your CSI-loving friend. Located at 604 West 26th Street in the lower level.

FirstTech at 2640 Hennepin Avenue and the Apple Store at 3018 Hennepin Avenue offer iPads, iPods, and more for those who don’t enjoy turning an actual page.

A number of other Uptown businesses offer specialty book selections, such as Kitchen Window’s cooking books and Paper Source or Urban Outfitters’ gift-type books.

For the cook or baker

One of the top-rated kitchenware stores in the Twin Cities, Kitchen Window, offers an incredibly large selection of nearly everything you can imagine (and often haven’t imagined) for cooking, baking, serving, or drinking. It has everything from manly BBQ accessories to candy making supplies to mixer accessories to martini glasses. An upstairs cooking school offers instructional courses, which may be a great option for those who already are well stocked in the pantry. Located in Calhoun Square at 3001 Hennepin Avenue. Or head down the street to CB2 (a trendier Crate & Barrel brand) that has various kitchenware and kitchen decor.

Perhaps surprise your chef with spices from Penzeys Spice. The retailer has an extensive selection of fresh spices and spice blends that people ooh and ahh over. Located at 3028 Hennepin Avenue.

A fine bottle of wine, some craft beer, or a bottle of scotch may be your idea of gift giving. Hennepin Lake Liquor is often cited as a top wine shop for its huge selection and low prices, but don’t forget to bring cash. Located at 1200 West Lake Street. Also visit Lake Wine & Spirits at 404 West Lake Street for a large selection of craft beer, cheese, and more. Hums or Lowry Hill Liquor may also fill your gift giving needs.

Quality foods often make for great gifts, and Lunds, Wedge coop, Kowalskis, and Bills Imported Foods has you covered.

For the eater
Indulge a friend or family member by getting a gift card to an Uptown restaurant. Whether they love Thai, organic or natural foods, Greek, bar food (okay, probably the drinks), American, or another flavor, there’s something special about sharing a meal. Many of Uptown’s restaurants offer special holiday gift certificate deals, like purchase $100 and get a bonus $25.

Uptown has a variety of apparel stores ready to keep you warm this holiday season. The recent opening of H & M and Francesca’s Collection in Calhoun Square, with American Apparel, Ragstock, Urban Outfitters, Heartbreaker, Timberland, Victoria’s Secret, Columbia Sprortswear, and The North Face all provide a lot of options. Local boutiques V-State, Covered, Atmosfere, Motto, and Design Collective all provide fashion-forward options.

Sox Appeal, Bay Street Shoes, Fluevog Shoes, and Shoe Zoo are ready to keep your feet warm, while Goorin Brothers will keep your head fashionable and covered.

For the Home
There are placemats, throw pillows, picture frames and more at CB2 at 31st and Hennepin. The large store has a large variety of home decor and gifts.

Go Home is a locally-owned home accessories and gift shop that exudes a little bit of Uptown funk while delivering quality products. Located at Lake & Hennepin next to Davanni’s.

Paper Source at 31st and Hennepin has a variety of gifts and paper products. Art Materials at 27th and Lyndale has nearly everything imaginable for the artist or design professional.

Patina at Franklin and Hennepin has an extensive gift and home decor selection with an interest in making your home comfortable. The store has treasures around each corner.

Penn Cycle and The Alt at Lyn-Lake can outfit bikes and accessories along with skate- and snowboards (The Alt). Penn Cycle also has a variety of work out equipment. Down next to Lake Calhoun at Lake Street and James Avenue, Cal Surf has skateboards, snowboards, and accessories and clothing.

ZRF Fossils at Lyndale & Lake has an extensive collection of fossils and gifts all from mother nature.

Smitten Kitten at Lyndale & Lake is a progressive sex toy store that has won many awards and prides itself on being more than a store by offering resources and such. The Hustler Store at 24th and Hennepin also carries an extensive selection of sex-oriented products.

There are countless other stores that can make your shopping experience complete. You should come check out what the greater Uptown area has to offer.
