This 1993 photo of the Rainbow Building, located on the northwest corner of Hennepin & Lake, shows Spudsters prominently on the corner. Annie’s Parlor was operating where the Rainbow Cafe had operating for decades prior and Chino Latino was an unhatched idea at that point.

Another early 1990s photo is available here.

How cities work and change, how they are the product of their inhabitants and outside forces, and the resulting livability keep me thinking and dreaming about the future. I work in transit oriented development and have a background in urban real estate development. I am Past President of an Uptown business organization, grew up in Uptown, was on an Uptown neighborhood association Board, and am an Uptown and Lyn-Lake historian.

Some of us who lived in Minneapolis from the early to mid 90s on were recently commenting how those days were Uptown’s “glory days.” Although some call it “progress” with the Uptown of today, I missed that Uptown of old, where it was still “hip” but not as busy, congested, or just plain irritating. Fond memories from some of those days, but not someplace I’d want to live today.

I think it’s interesting that the same exact for lease sign is in the same exact spot as it is today!
